El 14 de febrero de 1961, la Sagrada Congregación de Ritos removió el día de la fiesta de Santa Filomena del Calendario Litúrgico. Además, reemplazó la Misa "Proper" (Propia) del culto para sustituirla por la Misa del Común de Mártires. La razón dada es que "no existen pruebas históricas de su existencia", cuando en realidad, la evidencia a favor de la existencia de esta Santa es apabullante y consiste en los extraordinarios y numerosos prodigios que Dios ha concedido por su intercesión. Además, tenemos los testimonios de muchas personas muy santas. La veracidad de estos testigos es irreprochable, sin embargo, todo esto no se ha tenido en cuenta

El 11 de agosto de 1971, Luigi Espósito, en un artículo titulado "El culto en estos últimos diez años", dice:

"En 1964 cuando el obispo diocesano nos visitó, se le preguntó cual era la interpretación auténtica de la declaración 'Festum Autem S. Filumenae'. Queríamos saber exactamente si solamente se removió, el culto litúrgico o todo tipo de devoción. Recibimos la siguiente respuesta: "El culto litúrgico se remueve, el culto popular queda sin alteración. Se puede venerar la Santa aún con el honor de celebraciones externas y con la Misa del Común".

Cuando el Obsipo de Misore, Moneñor M. Fernandez, titular de la catedral de Santa Filomena en India, le preguntó a Pablo VI, cómo había que interpretar el decreto del 14 de febrero de 1961, éste le contestó "Siga como antes y no perturbe a los fieles".

O sea, que solamente se puede venerar y honrar a la Santa con celebraciones externas en su Santuario en Mugnano y en otras partes en donde por razones locales, existe su devoción. Además, no ya con su Misa Propia, sino con la Misa del Común de Mártires.

Tal vez, la lección que hay sacar de esto, es que debemos tener más confianza en los caminos de Dios. Los sencillos pueden ver como trabaja el Señor. Los caminos de Dios con frecuencia no son siempre los del hombre.

Concede a otras obras el estudio de la personalidad de Don Francisco de Lucía, el retrato completo de Sor María Luisa, los milagros y los promotores. de la devoción a la Santa por todo el mundo. When Misore, Bishop M. Fernandez, head of the Cathedral of St. Philomena in India, asked Paul VI, how one should interpret the decree of 14 February 1961, he was told "Continue as usual and do not disturb the faithful."
